Virgin Comics Signs Up Sachin Tendulkar
Virgin Comics has signed up cricketer Sachin Tendulkar for a comic book character called ‘Sachin the Master Blaster’, on whom games and an animation series will be developed. The comic book is expected to be released later this year. Details here at Exchange4media.
Virgin Comics is a New-York-based company floated by spiritual guru Deepak Chopra, film maker Shekhar Kapur and British billionaire Richard Branson. I wouldn’t be surprised if mobile comics are also a part of the plan – they are for other characters created by Virgin Comics.

Congrats CS the new office…keep rocking
This venture will definitely make the average Indian feel as if they have their hero closer to themselves. We will proudly say that our Indian super hero Sachin is a real hero, whose acts of heroism are known to and admired by the world, not an imaginary entity like the other comic heroes.
I don't know how much of a hero sachin is after the Indian's team's appallingly mediocre performance in the present ICC Worldcup. This move sounds similar to Indrajal's Kapil Dev comic character that they created back in the early 80s. I think Indian Express should think of giving their comic character properties (Bahadur) a face lift and relaunching them. I think they would be fairly well received. I think its success would be closely linked to making the comic character relevant to today's audiences, the story lines within (dacoits & bandits wouldn't work anymore), creating and sustaining mystique around the characters and the world that spawns them; and the marketing muscle behind each property to effectively position them in people's consideration sets.
Corrigendum:
I think kapil dev was actually featured in a comic style (illustrated) BSA SLR cycle print ad on the back cover of the comic book. The ad was part of a 3 story campaign if my memory serves me correctly. Its interesting why the Kapil Dev character was not invested in and taken to the comic book platform. I think it would have done well – given Kapil stellar celeb status back then.
Yes Rajivness: Kapil Dev was featured on the back cover of indrajal comics in late 1970s and early 1980s in a comic strip for bsa slr cycles. It was where he is getting late to catch his flight as his car breaks down and he sees a beautiful girl riding a bsa slr. She lets him ride it to the airport to catch his flight.
